Changing phones can mean losing more than chats and media. GBWhatsApp users often spend time refining wallpapers, colours, fonts, notification icons, conversation bubbles and home-screen layouts. Recreating those choices by hand is tedious, especially when moving from an older Android handset to a newer model.
A careful backup can preserve much of that visual setup, although modified WhatsApp builds do not always handle data in the same way as the official app. The safest approach is to save both the app’s internal backup and the relevant theme files, then restore them in the right order on the replacement phone.
Check the old phone before starting
Begin by opening GBWhatsApp on the old device and noting the exact version installed. Theme menus, folder names and backup options may differ between releases such as GBWhatsApp Pro, GBWhatsApp Delta or older builds. If you need to compare release information, the GBWhatsApp version listing can help identify the package you are using.
Open the mod’s settings and look for Chats, Themes, Universal, Backup and Restore, or a similarly named menu. Use the built-in “Backup chats” command first. This normally creates a local database backup, while a separate “Save theme” or “Share theme” option may create a theme package containing colours, fonts, wallpaper choices and interface settings.
Before changing phones, charge the handset and connect it to reliable Wi-Fi. In Australia, this is particularly useful if you are preparing the transfer at home in Perth or regional Queensland, where mobile reception can be less dependable than a fixed NBN connection. Avoid uninstalling the old app until the new installation has been tested.
Save theme files and local data
Use a file manager to inspect the internal storage folders created by GBWhatsApp. Depending on the release, theme files may be stored in a folder named Themes, GBThemes, WhatsApp, GBWhatsApp or a related Android media directory. Copy any exported theme files, local backup databases and important media to a computer, USB-C flash drive or encrypted cloud storage.
Android versions now restrict access to some app folders, so the file manager included with your phone may not show everything. If a theme export option is available inside GBWhatsApp, use it rather than relying only on manual copying. Give each file a clear name, such as home-phone-dark-theme, and keep a second copy in a separate location.
Privacy deserves attention here. A local database can contain message history, contact details and media, while a theme package may reveal little beyond visual preferences. Do not upload a complete GBWhatsApp folder to an unknown file-sharing service. If you are researching Android customisation or unofficial packages, this technology resource provides broader context, but personal backups should still remain under your control.
Prepare the replacement Android phone
Install the same GBWhatsApp family and, where practical, the same version used on the old handset. Moving directly from one release to another can create compatibility problems, especially if the newer package changes its folder structure or backup format. Download APK files only from a source you trust, check the package name, and scan files before opening them.
On the new phone, enable the file access permissions requested by GBWhatsApp. Copy the saved theme package and local backup into the location expected by the app before completing the restoration process. Some Android manufacturers, including Samsung and Xiaomi, may place copied files in Downloads first, so move them to the correct GBWhatsApp directory using a file manager.
Australian users should also account for handset differences. A phone bought through Telstra, Optus or Vodafone may include storage-management tools that automatically remove or quarantine unfamiliar APK files. Google Play Protect can also warn about unofficial apps. These warnings should not be dismissed casually; verify the source and keep a clean copy of your original files before proceeding.
Restore chats before applying the theme
Open GBWhatsApp, verify the phone number with the required SMS code, and allow the app to search for local backups. If the backup is not detected, close the app and check whether the database is in the correct folder. The directory may need to be created manually, and the file may need to follow the naming pattern expected by that particular build.
Restore conversations and media first, then restart the app. Confirm that recent chats, profile images and important attachments appear correctly. Restoring a theme before the message database can make troubleshooting harder because it introduces another variable into the setup process.
Once chats are visible, open the theme section and select Import, Load, Restore or Apply, depending on the wording used by the mod. Choose the saved theme file, apply it, and restart GBWhatsApp if the interface remains partly unchanged. Check the home screen, individual chat wallpaper, font scale, notification appearance and privacy-related display options.
Compare transfer methods and verify the result
Different backup methods preserve different parts of the experience. A chat database is designed for conversations, while a theme export focuses on appearance. Manual folder copying can preserve extra files, yet it is more vulnerable to Android storage restrictions and incompatible folder names.
| Transfer method | Theme settings | Chat history | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in theme export | Usually preserved | No | May omit custom fonts or external wallpapers |
| Local chat backup | Rarely preserved | Usually preserved | Must be restored in the correct folder |
| Manual GBWhatsApp folder copy | Often preserved | Often preserved | Folder access and version compatibility issues |
| Screenshots and manual recreation | Not transferred | No | Reliable only for reference |
After applying the theme, test calls, notifications, media downloads and message sending. Confirm that the keyboard, status bar and system dark mode still look correct on the new phone. Keep the old handset untouched for several days if possible, particularly before a long drive between Sydney and Melbourne or a busy work week.

Export the theme, copy the local backup, and move files using a trusted cable or encrypted storage. Then install the matching build, restore chats first, apply the theme second, and verify every important function before wiping the old Android phone. This simple sequence gives your new handset a familiar GBWhatsApp layout without depending on memory or rebuilding every setting from scratch.
