Changing Status Privacy for New Contacts in YOWhatsApp

YOWhatsApp gives Android users more control over how WhatsApp behaves, including themes, privacy options and extra controls for status updates. One useful setting is the default audience for new contacts, which determines who can view future Status posts after someone is added to your address book.

This matters when your contact list includes workmates, customers, neighbours or people from community groups. A new number saved after a weekend in Sydney or a footy chat should not automatically receive access to every personal update if your preferred audience is limited.

The setting is usually managed through YOWhatsApp’s privacy menu rather than the standard WhatsApp account screen. Names and locations can vary between builds, so the exact wording may appear as Status privacy, Status audience or Privacy settings.

Because YOWhatsApp is an unofficial modified APK, menus can change after an update. Before changing privacy controls, use a current release from a source you trust, back up important chats and avoid giving sensitive information to unknown download pages.

Find the status privacy control

Open YOWhatsApp on your Android phone and tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner. Select Settings, then open Privacy or Privacy and security. Look for Status privacy, Status audience or a similarly named option under the section for disappearing content and status updates.

The available choices normally follow WhatsApp’s familiar audience model. My contacts allows saved contacts to see your Status. My contacts except lets you block selected people, while Only share with restricts visibility to a chosen group.

For new contacts, My contacts is the broadest automatic setting. When a number is saved to your phone and synchronised with YOWhatsApp, that person may become eligible to view later Status posts. This can be convenient for family and social circles, but it is less suitable for mixed lists containing clients or casual acquaintances.

Set a safer default audience

Choose My contacts except if you want most contacts to see updates while excluding particular people. This is practical for Australians who use the same phone for work and personal life, such as tradies dealing with customers, property managers speaking with tenants or small-business owners managing local orders.

Select Only share with when your Status is mainly for close friends and family. You can create a small audience containing trusted contacts in Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane or elsewhere, without exposing personal posts to every number saved from a marketplace enquiry or community noticeboard.

After choosing an audience, tap Done, Save or the back arrow, depending on the build. Some YOWhatsApp versions apply the change immediately, while others show a confirmation prompt. Publish a test Status with harmless content and check the viewer list after asking a trusted contact to verify visibility.

Check new-contact behaviour after saving

Adding a new contact does not always refresh privacy rules instantly. Close and reopen YOWhatsApp, allow contact synchronisation, and check that the number is saved with the correct country code. Australian mobile numbers may appear as 04xx xxx xxx locally or +61 4xx xxx xxx internationally, and duplicate entries can cause confusing results.

If a new contact can view a Status unexpectedly, return to Status privacy and review the exclusion list. Also check whether the person is using a different number, has been added to a group, or is viewing an update that was posted before you changed the audience.

YOWhatsApp may also preserve the audience selected for an individual Status. Before posting, open the audience selector shown near the caption area and confirm the current setting. This extra check is worthwhile when sharing updates from a school event, a local market or a trip along the Gold Coast.

Keep privacy controls separate from extra features

Modified WhatsApp builds often place privacy options beside tools such as hiding online status, disabling read receipts and downloading Status media. These controls are separate from the audience for new contacts, so enabling one does not automatically change the others.

Extra automation can also make the app feel different from official WhatsApp. For example, users comparing background tools and modified clients may find useful context in this DYOWA automation guide, but automation should never be assumed to improve Status privacy.

Review permissions as well. YOWhatsApp may request access to contacts, storage, notifications and media. Only enable permissions needed for normal use, and be cautious with builds that request unusual access. Independent Android resources such as Android mod safety advice can help explain general risks around unofficial applications.

Troubleshoot updates and privacy changes

If the status audience option is missing, update YOWhatsApp only after checking the release notes and backing up chats. A redesigned privacy panel may move the control, while an outdated build may display incomplete options or fail to synchronise new contacts correctly.

Clear the app cache rather than deleting app data first. Check Android’s contact permissions, restart the phone and confirm that the correct account is active. Reinstalling an unofficial APK can remove local data if the backup process was incomplete, so treat that step as a last resort.

Other modified clients may organise similar tools differently. Users who also compare FMWhatsApp can review FMWhatsApp quick replies, but settings from one mod cannot be assumed to carry across to another. Each APK has its own menus, privacy behaviour and update history.

Set the audience to My contacts except or Only share with, test it with a trusted person and review the selector before important posts. Keep a backup, monitor new-contact visibility and choose a well-maintained YOWhatsApp release so your privacy preferences remain predictable.
