How to stop FMWhatsApp from saving photos sent via camera in Google Photos

FMWhatsApp can save pictures taken inside a chat to the phone’s WhatsApp media folders before Google Photos backs them up. This can be confusing because the image may appear in Google Photos even when you never pressed the regular camera shutter or chose to download a file.

The fix usually involves two separate settings: FMWhatsApp’s media visibility or gallery setting, and Google Photos’ backup controls for device folders. Changing only one of them may hide future images from the phone’s gallery while still allowing cloud backup, or stop backup while leaving local copies on the handset.

The menu names can vary between FMWhatsApp releases and Android skins. A Samsung Galaxy sold in Australia may show slightly different wording from a Google Pixel used in Brisbane or an Oppo device used in Melbourne, so look for the closest matching option rather than relying on an identical label.

Change FMWhatsApp’s media visibility

Open FMWhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu, choose Settings, and open Chats. Look for Media visibility, Show media in gallery, or a similar option. Turn it off if you want newly received and captured WhatsApp images to stay out of the standard gallery and Google Photos’ general photo view.

Some FMWhatsApp builds include extra controls under FM Mods, Universal, Privacy, or Media. Check for options such as Save to gallery, Auto-save camera photos, or Save sent media. Disable the setting that stores camera images locally, then close and reopen the app so the change is applied.

This may affect images captured inside a conversation, but it does not necessarily remove files already stored on the device. It also may not prevent Google Photos from backing up a folder that has already been selected for cloud synchronisation.

Stop Google Photos from backing up the folder

Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture, then go to Photos settings and Backup. Select Back up device folders and find folders named WhatsApp Images, WhatsApp Images/Sent, FMWhatsApp, or another FMWhatsApp-related directory. Turn backup off for any folder containing the camera pictures you do not want uploaded.

On some Android phones, sent images are stored in a subfolder rather than the main WhatsApp Images folder. Check each relevant folder carefully. If you use Google Photos on a Pixel in Sydney or a Samsung phone in Perth, the folder structure may differ because manufacturers organise Android storage differently.

Turning off backup does not erase images already uploaded to your Google account. To remove an existing picture, open it in Google Photos, check that it has finished syncing if you want to retain a copy elsewhere, and use the delete option. Review the Bin afterwards if you want permanent removal according to Google Photos’ retention rules.

Remove local copies without losing wanted photos

Use the Files app or your phone’s file manager to browse to Internal storage > FMWhatsApp or Android > media, depending on the release and Android version. Look inside folders such as WhatsApp Images, Sent, and Camera. Select only the unwanted images and delete them after confirming they are not needed for a conversation or legal record.

Android may restrict direct access to app folders, particularly on newer devices. If the folder is hidden, use the storage controls inside FMWhatsApp, Google Photos, or the device’s app settings instead of installing an unfamiliar file manager. Guidance about Android storage behaviour can also be compared with practical material on Android file management.

If the pictures remain visible in Google Photos after deletion from the phone, they may be cloud copies rather than local files. Google Photos can display backed-up items even when the original file no longer exists on the handset, so check the backup status and account library before assuming the setting failed.

Keep camera captures private by default

For a chat-by-chat approach, open the relevant FMWhatsApp conversation, tap the contact or group name, and look for a Media visibility control. Set it to No or Off if that option is available. This is useful when you want family or work-group images hidden while keeping selected conversations visible in the gallery.

You can also disable automatic media downloads under Settings > Storage and data. Restrict photos on mobile data and Wi-Fi if you want to reduce unwanted downloads, especially when travelling between Adelaide, Canberra, or regional areas with inconsistent coverage. This controls incoming media more directly than the gallery setting, so use both where necessary.

Remember that a photo taken with the in-chat camera may still be temporarily written to storage so FMWhatsApp can send it. The goal is to prevent permanent gallery placement and cloud backup, not necessarily to stop every short-lived file created during message processing.

Check privacy and app safety

FMWhatsApp is an unofficial modified WhatsApp APK, so its settings and storage paths can change between releases. A new update may restore gallery visibility, create a new media folder, or introduce a different backup behaviour. After updating, send a test picture to a private chat and check both the phone gallery and Google Photos before using the app normally.

Use a reputable release source and review requested permissions. Camera, microphone, contacts, storage, and notification access should have a clear purpose. Australian users should also remember that the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles do not make an unofficial messaging modification automatically safe; protection depends on the app’s code, developer practices, account security, and the permissions granted on the phone. For related modified-app coverage, YOWhatsApp version notes can help you compare how different builds handle media and privacy options.

Avoid granting accessibility access, SMS control, or unrestricted file access unless you understand why it is required. Keep Google account two-step verification enabled, use a screen lock, and review Google Photos’ sharing and partner settings. If FMWhatsApp repeatedly ignores your choices or behaves unexpectedly, record the version number and report the issue through the site’s support team rather than downloading random “fix” APKs from advertisements.

After changing the settings, test the complete sequence: capture a photo through FMWhatsApp, send it, open Google Photos, check Collections > On this device, and inspect Photos settings > Backup > Back up device folders. If the image is missing from both the local gallery and the selected backup folders, the configuration is working. Use this check after major Android or FMWhatsApp updates to keep unwanted camera photos out of Google Photos.
