Browse allHide selected FMWhatsApp chats with private mode
FMWhatsApp’s private mode offers a cleaner way to keep selected conversations out of the main chat list. Instead of archiving a chat, which can still reveal that it exists, you can move it into a separate private area and open it only when needed. This is useful for sensitive contacts, confidential work discussions or conversations you want to keep visually separate.
The feature is a display tool, not stronger encryption. It does not make an unofficial APK safer, and some builds leave notifications or message previews unchanged. Before relying on it, check the current menu labels, test it with a non-sensitive contact and decide whether archived, muted and locked-screen notifications offer a better balance.
Android users in Australia should treat sideloading with the same caution as any unknown app. FMWhatsApp is not distributed by Meta as an official WhatsApp build, so a modified package can request excessive access, miss security updates or contain unwanted code. Use a separate number where practical and avoid banking, identity or workplace accounts.
A smooth setup depends on a recoverable chat history and a clear route back into hidden conversations. Labels vary slightly between FMWhatsApp releases, but the general process is consistent: prepare the phone, enable the setting, select individual chats, then confirm that you can find and restore them.
Understand what private mode changes
Private mode changes where selected chats appear rather than how their messages are transmitted. Hidden conversations remain connected to the same WhatsApp account and may still arrive through notifications, shared links or contact searches, depending on the build. It is therefore visual concealment, not a security vault or replacement for device encryption.
Builds differ in their controls, so a message privacy comparison can help show how related modified apps handle message visibility. Do not assume that another mod’s menu path works in FMWhatsApp, because developers may rename settings or move features between releases.
Archiving, muting, hiding and locking are separate actions. Archiving moves a chat away from the main list; muting controls sounds and notifications; private mode removes selected conversations from normal viewing. Combining private mode with muted notifications and a locked screen gives you more control without relying on one setting.
Prepare a safe, recoverable setup
Before installation, complete a reputable pre-install security review and use a secondary number if possible. A recent chat backup is also important because restoring conversations between modified and official clients can be inconsistent, so irreplaceable photographs and documents should be copied separately.
Before installation:
- Use a secondary phone number rather than your primary account.
- Back up important chats and copy essential media to secure storage.
- Check the publisher, version number, update date and reported permission requirements.
- Download the APK only from the tracked release page rather than a message attachment.
After installation:
- Keep Play Protect enabled and review every requested permission.
- Open the app without importing a verification code from an unknown sender.
- Create a test chat with a trusted contact before hiding anything important.
- Record where the private-chat and restore options appear in that version.
Never share a WhatsApp verification code with the mod’s developer or another person. If the APK requests contacts, accessibility, SMS or device-admin access that does not match its advertised function, remove it and return to a trusted build.
Enable the setting and select chats
Open FMWhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu in the main chat list. Look under Settings for FMWhatsApp, Privacy or Chat settings. Depending on the release, you may find Private mode, Hide chats or Private chats. Some versions open the chat selector immediately, while others first show a toggle.
Open the selector and tick the conversations you want to conceal. Another common route is to open an individual chat, tap its menu and choose Hide chat or Move to private chats. Check the contact name and photograph before confirming, because outdated profile details can make similar conversations easy to select by mistake.
After saving, return to the main list and verify that each chosen chat has disappeared. Send a test message to confirm that normal delivery still works. If the build offers a PIN, pattern or biometric lock for private chats, enable it and use a unique credential rather than repeating your phone’s unlock code.
Find, restore and manage hidden chats
Hidden conversations are usually available through Private chats, Hidden chats or a similarly named entry in the overflow menu. The exact location can vary between versions, so check the current release notes if the expected option is absent. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling the APK, as that will not necessarily restore private-chat indexes.
Hiding a conversation may not disable its notification preview. If you also want to control what appears on a lock screen, review the app’s notification settings after moving the chat. A separate profile privacy comparison illustrates why contact-facing privacy controls should be reviewed independently from chat-list concealment.
To bring a conversation back, open the private-chat area, select the chat and choose Unhide, Move to main list or Show chat. Do not select Delete chat when you only want to reorganise it, because deletion can remove the message history. Restart the app once after restoring a chat to confirm that the change has been saved.
Protect privacy while using the mod
Australia’s Privacy Act 1988 and Australian Privacy Principles provide a useful privacy benchmark, even though their direct obligations mainly apply to covered organisations. Businesses must also avoid misleading claims under the Australian Consumer Law, so descriptions such as “completely safe” or “virus-free” should be treated cautiously unless they can be independently verified.
Practical habits matter on crowded trains and trams in Melbourne and Sydney, where a notification preview can expose a conversation to nearby passengers. Lock the screen, disable message previews and use private mode for especially sensitive chats. When downloading updates over café Wi-Fi in Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide, use a trusted home or mobile connection instead. Large APK downloads can also consume a prepaid data allowance on Telstra or Optus plans.
Open the current FMWhatsApp release entry on WhatsAppMods.org, review its version notes and verify the source before installing. Then create a test chat, hide it, close the app and confirm that you can access and restore it. Once those checks pass, apply the setting only to the conversations that need it and keep an independent backup of important material.
