Floating chat heads with GBWhatsApp on Android

GBWhatsApp can place an active chat in a movable window that stays above the app you are using. The floating bubble keeps a conversation accessible while you browse, check directions, listen to music, or play a game, without returning to the messaging screen each time.

The effect resembles Android bubbles, although it comes from a modified app rather than the standard notification system. Unofficial builds carry additional risk, so readers should treat setup guidance and the publication’s site background and scope as part of the same trust check.

What GBWhatsApp chat heads actually do

A GBWhatsApp chat head is a system-level overlay drawn by Android, not a new tab embedded inside every app. Open a conversation, enable its head, and you can minimise it to a bubble or drag it around the screen. Tapping the head usually returns you to the full chat.

“Over any app” means the head can appear above the foreground app, such as Chrome, YouTube, Google Maps, or a shopping site. It does not mean every app accepts overlays: protected banking screens, secure work profiles, lock screens, and some games may block or hide them. Depending on the release, you may also customise the head’s colour, border and placement.

Enable floating bubbles on Android

First, obtain a GBWhatsApp build from the WhatsAppMods release catalogue, compare its version and update notes, and avoid shortened links sent in chats. Install it only if you have verified the publisher and file. Keep the official WhatsApp app for sensitive or work conversations.

Open GBWhatsApp and visit Settings, then look for Chat heads, Multi chat, or a similarly named option. Enable the feature and select the conversations that should appear as bubbles. The wording differs between releases, but the relevant switch normally lives in the messaging settings rather than Android’s home-screen controls.

Android may then request Display over other apps and notification access. Grant both if the build needs them, or the head will not appear. The permission path is Settings > Apps > Special app access > Display over other apps on many Google Pixel phones, while Samsung One UI uses similar wording under Special app access. You can revoke these permissions later.

Use chat heads across everyday apps

In Sydney or Melbourne, a useful routine might be keeping a head above Google Maps while planning a trip, then opening it after the train arrives. Similar value appears over shopping sites, transit apps, and video players. Read and reply while stopped rather than interacting with a bubble while driving.

Most builds let you drag, minimise, close, and sometimes pin a head. Multiple chat heads can separate family, work, and group conversations, but several moving windows quickly make a small screen busy. Use one or two heads, choose compact notifications, and check whether the bubble remains responsive after the screen rotates.

Protect privacy, battery and account access

An overlay exposes message previews to anyone nearby and can obscure important controls. Avoid using chat heads over a banking app, password manager, health record, or work profile. If a game detects an overlay and closes, return to the normal chat view instead of attempting to bypass the protection.

Unofficial APKs also need careful handling because they may not receive the same security updates as the official client. Scan the file with Google Play Protect, confirm whether the release source publishes a hash, and never grant accessibility control merely to make bubbles work. ACMA regularly warns Australians about malware links shared through messaging apps, so a familiar contact’s message is not proof that a download is safe.

For another view of the Android ecosystem, an external resource listing may help identify terminology, but the primary release page remains the safer source for the file. Battery drain is usually modest; however, Samsung’s aggressive background-app settings and mobile-network changes on Optus, Telstra, or Vodafone can interrupt a persistent head. Restart the overlay after an update if it disappears.

Compare the main floating chat options

The right choice depends on how much control you need and how much permission you are willing to grant. Official notifications are least intrusive, native bubbles stay inside apps designed for them, and GBWhatsApp offers broader styling for users already comfortable with modified software.

Third-party floating-window utilities can place a shortcut over anything, but they add another app with its own data and advertising practices. Compare the persistence of the floating window, available chat controls, update history, and account isolation before choosing.

Option How it floats Best use Main limitation
GBWhatsApp chat heads Movable, custom overlay above most foreground apps Mod users wanting several chat controls Unofficial build and broad overlay access
Official WhatsApp notifications Banner or notification shade Quick, discreet alerts No persistent movable chat window
Official WhatsApp bubbles System-styled bubble where supported Users wanting a lighter conversation window Availability depends on the app and version
Android or OEM floating windows System or One UI window for supported apps Quick reference across supported tools Not every third-party app supports them

A safer setup checklist for Australian users

A measured setup takes only a few minutes and avoids turning a useful convenience into a security gap. Follow these checks before relying on floating chat heads throughout the day:

  • Check the release listing, version number and checksum before installing, and abandon random mirrors.
  • Back up important chats in the official app and keep sensitive or work conversations there.
  • Grant only the overlay and notification permissions required by the selected feature.
  • Test the head after Android, GBWhatsApp and carrier updates, especially on Optus or Telstra networks.
  • Remove heads before opening banking, work or password screens, and disable the overlay permission when it is not needed.

Open GBWhatsApp, enable Chat heads, allow the overlay prompt, and test one non-sensitive conversation over another app. Keep the official WhatsApp app ready for sensitive chats and disable the overlay permission whenever you need a distraction-free or protected screen.
